Techno-economic competitiveness of renewable fuel alternatives in the marine sector

چکیده

The maritime sector accounts for almost 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is under increasing pressure to decarbonise rapidly. Renewable fuels represent a promising pathway decarbonisation, but their high costs hinder adoption. Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) can further augment marine fuel decarbonisation adds the cost. This work presents harmonised cost comparison four renewable carbon (methanol, dimethyl ether (DME), liquefied natural (LNG) bio-oil) produced either from routes utilising biomass (biofuels, including CCS) or CO2 (e-fuels). differing technology status production has been accounted using RAND Corporation method estimate pioneer plants. Additionally, impact different levels taxation (15 140 €/t CO2) on economic viability alternative examined. None were found be close incumbent without taxation, which needs considerable adequately bridge gap. Methanol DME point capture are lowest choices if full scale sale oxygen by-product considered. biofuel remain at premium existing fuels, while direct air (DAC)-based most expensive among options studied, besides requiring completely electricity footprint not exceed that fossil fuels. LNG particularly gap, bringing its as potential bridging into doubt.

Techno-economic and resource analysis of hydroprocessed renewable jet fuel

Background Biomass-derived jet fuel is an alternative jet fuel (AJF) showing promise of reducing the dependence on fossil fuel and greenhouse gas emissions. Hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) concept is also known as one of the pathways for producing bio jet fuel. HEFA fuel was approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials in 2011, and can be blended up to 50% with conven...

Electrical Components for Marine Renewable Energy Arrays: A Techno-Economic Review

This paper presents a review of the main electrical components that are expected to be present in marine renewable energy arrays. The review is put in context by appraising the current needs of the industry and identifying the key components required in both device and array-scale developments. For each component, electrical, mechanical and cost considerations are discussed; with quantitative d...

ATLANTIS: techno-economic model of the European electricity sector

Since the nuclear accident in Fukushima the European electricity economy has been in transition. The ongoing shut down of nuclear power plants and the widespread installation of wind power and photovoltaic generation capacities, especially in Germany, has led to a high share of intermittent renewable electricity production. This high amount of generation with very little variable cost has led t...

Stochastic techno-economic analysis of alcohol-to-jet fuel production

BACKGROUND Alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) is one of the technical feasible biofuel technologies. It produces jet fuel from sugary, starchy, and lignocellulosic biomass, such as sugarcane, corn grain, and switchgrass, via fermentation of sugars to ethanol or other alcohols. This study assesses the ATJ biofuel production pathway for these three biomass feedstocks, and advances existing techno-economic anal...
